Upload FAQs - How do I delete old files from my web space?

Instructions for removing files vary depending on whether you are using Front Page or FTP.  If you are using Front Page, it is important that you remove the files using Front Page as using FTP on a Front Page site can corrupt the extensions that allow Front Page to operate.

Be VERY careful when removing files from your site.  ONLY remove files that you are sure you put in the space.  There are files put into your site directory by the server to allow your site to function.  Deleting any of the server created files will cause your site to stop functioning and may require the site to be totally deleted and reinstalled to correct.

File Removal for WS FTP users:

To delete files using WS_FTP, connect your WS FTP session as normal.  Navigate to the httpdocs directory.  Single click on a file you would like to delete to select it.  Click the Delete button on the right side to delete the file.  A confirmation box will appear asking if you're sure you want to delete.  Click Yes and the file will be deleted.

File Removal for Front Page users:
In Front Page, open the copy of your website on your harddrive.  In the Folder List window on the left side, locate the file you would like to delete.  Single click on the file to select it and right click for a menu.  Select delete and a Confirm Delete box will appear.  Click Yes to delete the file.

After deleting all the files you no longer need, publish your site as usual.  As the site is publishing, confirmation boxes will appear asking if you want to delete the same files off of the server.  Click Yes and the matching files will be removed from the server.
